Mr. Venaas teaches 5th grade band, 6th grade band, 5th grade classroom music as well as directing the middle school jazz band.
The 6th grade band has won the first and second place trophies at the Adventureland Festival of Bands, receiving a superior and excellent ratings. Over the years the middle school jazz band has won trophies at jazz festivals they competed at. In 2011 the middle school was asked to perform at the South Dakota Bandmasters Conference.
Mr. Venaas received his Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Applied Arts degrees from the University of Minnesota. He studied clarinet and saxophone with Dr. Robert Williams and flute with Dr. Marion Valasek. He has played clarinet with the Le Mars and Sioux City Municipal Bands. He has taught elementary, middle school and high school band in Minnesota, Iowa, and for the last eighteen years, at Dakota Valley in South Dakota.
Mr. Venaas has taken numerous graduate-level classes. In 2013 he conducted in the Minnesota Area Conducting Workshop at Southwest Minnesota State University and in 2016 conducted in a masterclass with famed conductor Frank Battisti. He has participated numerous times at the University of South Dakota Band Directors' Institute.
Mr.Venaas received his Band Instrument Repair Certification from Red Wing Technical College in 1992, studying woodwind and brass repair. He has his repair shop in his home in Sioux City, Iowa. Mr. Venaas has written and had had published four articles about band instrument repair in the national band magazine, The Instrumentalist.
