Daryl Jessen has been an instrumental director for elementary, junior high, and high school bands for 36 years. A graduate of Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, he has been director of bands at public and privates schools of every size in Nebraska, Iowa, and South Dakota. He was named “Outstanding Young Band Director” by the Nebraska Bandmasters Association. He’s listed in the “Who’s Who in Music Education” and has earned awards from the South Dakota Music Education Association and the National Association for Music Education. Professional affiliations include South Dakota Bandmasters, South Dakota Music Education Association and he is also currently President of the South Dakota Federation of Music Clubs.
Groups under his direction have performed for many unique events including gubernatorial inaugurations, monument dedications, televised worship services, and being the first high school band to perform at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, His ensembles and soloists consistently earn superior ratings at contest. Many of his students continue their musical studies at the college level and more than a dozen of them have followed in his footsteps and become band directors for the next generation. Currently, he is the 7-12 Director of Bands for Dakota Valley Schools in North Sioux City, South Dakota, and choir director for Buchanan Avenue Baptist Church in Sioux City, Iowa. He and his wife, Lori, live in Dakota City, Nebraska.
