Daryl Jessen has been “flapping his wings” in front of elementary, junior high, and high school bands for more than 33 years. A graduate of Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, he has been director of bands at schools of every size in Nebraska, Iowa, and South Dakota. He was named “Outstanding Young Band Director” by the Nebraska Bandmasters Association. He’s listed in the “Who’s Who in Music Education” and has earned awards from the South Dakota Music Education Association and the National Association for Music Education.
Groups under his direction have performed for many unique events including gubernatorial inaugurations, monument dedications, and televised services. His ensembles and soloists consistently earn superior ratings at contest. Many of his students continue their musical studies at the college level and more than a dozen of them have followed in his footsteps and become band directors for the next generation. Currently, he is Director of Bands for the Dakota Valley Schools in North Sioux City, South Dakota, and choir director for Buchanan Avenue Baptist Church in Sioux City, Iowa. He and his wife, Lori, live in Dakota City, Nebraska.
